What toner and gloss are in the salon and how long each one lasts

Toner and gloss are two colour services that do not lift: they deposit pigment on a base that is already there. A toner corrects an unwanted reflect, almost always the yellow or orange a bleach leaves behind; a gloss is mainly about shine and, when it carries colour, a soft reflect. Neither covers grey and neither lasts like an oxidation dye: both wash out, and how long that takes depends on the product and on how the hair is cared for at home.
What is toning in a salon?
Toning means neutralising an unwanted reflect with its opposite on the colour wheel. Violet cancels yellow and blue cancels orange, which is why toners are almost always cool. The service comes after lightening: when a base is bleached, the warm underlying pigment shows through, red and orange at the lower levels, yellow at the higher ones, and the toner takes that background to the cool blonde, beige or platinum the client asked for.
One rule is worth explaining before you start: a toner does not lift. It works on the level the hair already has, so if the bleach stops at a strong yellow, no toner will turn it into platinum. Lighten to the right level first, then tone.
In the Yanguas range, toning is done with products of different kinds, and choosing well between them is half the result:
| Product | What it is | How it is applied |
|---|---|---|
| Attraxtion acid toners T00.1 to T00.4 | Gentle oxidation colour | 1:1 with 10 volume developer, 10 to 25 minutes, on a base no darker than light brown |
| Attraxtion 901 or 911 | Shades that neutralise leftover gold | After a bleach that leaves gold behind |
| Hidracolor H00.1 Ice Silver | Direct colour, no oxidation | On damp hair, 5 to 10 minutes |
Acid toners neutralise the unwanted tone without lifting. Hidracolor Ice Silver removes the yellow and orange tones from blonde and brings back platinum reflects, with no developer needed.
What is the difference between a hair dye and a gloss?
An oxidation dye, such as Attraxtion or Free, is mixed with developer and forms the colour inside the fibre. It can lift, depending on the developer volume, and it covers grey: Free reaches up to 100 % with a natural finish. That colour does not wash out; it grows out with the hair and leaves a regrowth line.
Gloss is a salon term with no fixed technical definition. It describes a semi-permanent or demi-permanent colour, clear or with a hint of tone, that deposits without lifting and whose main purpose is shine. Like a toner, it does not lift colour or cover grey, and instead of growing out it fades with each wash, with no regrowth line.
| Service | Lifts | Covers grey | How it goes | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oxidation dye | Yes | Yes | Grows out and leaves regrowth | Changing or setting a colour |
| Toner | No | No | Washes out | Neutralising an unwanted reflect |
| Gloss | No | No | Washes out | Shine and a soft reflect |
The line between toner and gloss is blurred: a gloss with cool pigment also tones. What separates them is the purpose of the service. A toner corrects; a gloss refreshes and brings light to a colour that is already right.
On the Yanguas chart, the closest thing to a gloss is Hidracolor, a direct cream colour with no oxidation, no ammonia, no sulphates and no parabens, which adds moisture and shine and fades evenly with washing. Its H000 Snow White shade, applied on its own, works as a nourishing treatment that leaves strong hydration and shine, which in practice is a clear gloss. Mixed with any other shade it softens the colour: equal parts for intense shades and 1:5 for pastels.
How long does a toner last in the hair?
There is no single figure, because it depends on the product's technology and on how often the hair is washed. As a reference, the Sally Beauty toner guide puts semi-permanent toners at around 6 to 10 washes, demi-permanent ones at between 12 and 28 washes, and an in-salon toner at an average of 3 to 4 weeks. Yanguas does not publish a wash count for its toners, so talk to the client in washes, not weeks: someone who washes daily will see the toner fade sooner than someone who washes twice a week.
The same guide lists what shortens it: sun, hard water, pollution and chlorine. Hair that the bleach has left very sensitised tends to release pigment sooner, which is why a toner fades faster on the most damaged ends than on the mid-lengths.
What extends the result is home care. For blonde, highlighted or bleached hair, Blond shampoo carries purple and blue micropigments that neutralise copper and yellow tones, and is left on for 1 to 5 minutes depending on the tone wanted. For grey or white hair and bleached blondes, Silver shampoo uses violet micropigments and is left on for 1 to 3 minutes. Neither replaces the salon toner: they hold it between visits. Against the sun, the Vibrant Color Protect treatments carry UV filters and protect coloured hair against colour loss.
When to recommend a toner or a gloss after bleaching
The decision comes from looking at the hair once it is lightened, not from the service menu:
- A yellow or gold background is left on a light blonde. This is a toner job. After a Plex bleach that leaves traces of gold, Yanguas recommends toning with Attraxtion 901 or 911; for a controlled cool blonde, the T00 acid toners.
- The goal is platinum on an almost white blonde, with no more developer. Hidracolor Ice Silver, 5 to 10 minutes on damp hair, depending on the starting level and how much toning is wanted.
- The tone is right, but it looks dull or porous. This is where a gloss fits: Snow White on its own, as a hydration and shine treatment.
- The client wants a pastel. Bleach to a light, almost white blonde, then apply Hidracolor mixed with Snow White at 1:5.
- The issue is grey hair. Neither toner nor gloss: it needs an oxidation dye.
💡 Technical tip: before a direct colour, ask whether the client may want to change soon. Color.Remover removes oxidation pigments, but it does not work on Hidracolor's direct colour, which has to wash out.
Toner and gloss with Yanguas colour
Toner and gloss are short services, a few minutes in the chair, that add on to a bleach or highlights and give the client a reason to come back when the reflect fades. To offer them well you need three pieces: a gentle oxidation toner to correct, a direct colour for platinum, pastel and shine, and a toning shampoo for home care.
Yanguas Professional makes all three in its professional-channel range: the Attraxtion acid toners and shades, the vegan direct colour Hidracolor with its Ice Silver and Snow White shades, and the Blond and Silver shampoos. The rest of the colour systems, with their charts and mixing ratios, are in the Yanguas professional colour section.
